This course examines various art forms produced in Japan, or by Japanese artists, that were inspired by contact with the United States (as well as some specific Western European nations). The course will attempt to to uncover more complicated patterns of cross-cultural exchange through a careful examination of art works as well as the ideas of "West" and "East" in each historical, diplomatic and political contexts.
