This course is a survey of the basic content and key issues of pre-modern Korean culture, both of which are believed to underlie the present Korean culture. The course will focus on important cultural sources and their historical contexts, for example, Myth, Shamanism, Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism in the context of pre-modern Korea. The course will also discuss how those cultural sources and their related historical facts are appreciated and made use of by modern Korean culture and society.
