Transportation Books
Handbook of Transportation Engineering by New York: McGraw-Hill, c2004. A comprehensive, problem-solving engineering guide on the strategic planning, development, and maintenance of public and private transportation systems.
The KU Libraries have hundreds of books on various aspects of transportation. Here are just a few of the key texts:
- Transportation Planning Handbook byWashington, DC: Institute of Transportation Engineers, c2009. 3rd ed. A reference source on the guidelines and techniques in current practice of transportation planning. It covers local and state planning issues, parking facility design, mass transit, and financial and environmental concerns.
Sustainable Transportation by New York: Guilford Press, c2010. Provides a framework for developing systems that move people and products efficiently while minimizing damage to the local and global environment.
Transportation Studies at KU
Transportation is very much an interdisciplinary field of study. Research breakthroughs come in all sorts of areas, from energy-efficient fuels, to walkability-focused neighborhoods, to large-scale computer modeling of air, land and sea transportation routes. At KU, transportation classes are primarily taught in the Civil Engineering program in the School of Engineering and in the Urban Planning program in the School of Architecture, Design and Planning but classes in other programs such as offered by the School of Business or the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences may involve transportation issues.
A Transportation Lab and a Transportation Materials Lab are available within the School of Engineering.
Professional Organizations
- Transportation Research BoardTransportation Research Board of the National Academies whose mission is to provide leadership in transportation innovation and progress through research and information exchange, conducted within a setting that is objective, interdisciplinary, and multimodal. Conducts meetings and workshops, manages research, and issues publications
- Institute of Transportation EngineersAn international educational and scientific association of transportation professionals who are responsible for meeting mobility and safety needs. ITE facilitates the application of technology and scientific principles to research, planning, functional design, implementation, operation, policy development and management for any mode of ground transportation. Through its products and services, ITE promotes professional development of its members, supports and encourages education, stimulates research, develops public awareness programs and serves as a conduit for the exchange of professional information.
- American Association of State Highway and Transportation OfficialsAASHTO is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association representing highway and transportation departments in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. It represents all five transportation modes: air, highways, public transportation, rail, and water. Its primary goal is to foster the development, operation, and maintenance of an integrated national transportation system.
