International Grad Students Guide to Teaching and Learning in the USA: Giving Presentations

This guide recommends videos, books, article, reports, podcasts, etc. that can help them adapt and thrive as they work throught the graduate study programs.

David Phillips' Principles for Giving Presentations

  1. ONE message per slide
  2. Don't read the slide
  3. MOST IMPORTANT idea should be the LARGEST
  4. Contrast what you want their eyes to focus on  and blur out the rest. A dark background relaxes the audience's eyes, so they focus on you, the speaker. You are giving the presentation, and the PP is a visual aid.
  5. The magic number of objects per slide is 6 (the number of objects in the presentation is the key, not the number of slides.)
