The Chronicles of Melanie (Latvian: Melānijas hronika) is a 2016 Latvian biographical drama film directed by Viesturs Kairish, starring Sabine Timoteo. Based on the true story of Melanija Vanaga, this film is a brutally realistic and terrifying account of the mass deportation of residents of Soviet-occupied Latvia that took place in June 1941.
Viestur Kairish (b. 1971) is a Latvian opera, movie, and theatre director. He has made a successful career in Latvia and Germany as an acclaimed director of operas, and his movies and plays have toured in many European festivals. Rose Stiebra (b. 1942) is a well-known and noticeable Latvian director, animator, and screenwriter. She was born in Riga, graduated from the Faculty of Puppetry at the Saint Petersburg State Theatre Arts Academy, and went on to work as an animator for Latvian Television (1966-1987), Rīgas kinostudija (1987-1990), and the animation studio Dauka (since 1991).
