EALC 319/519/790: Contemporary Chinese Fiction and Film

This course offers an introduction to contemporary Chinese literature since the end of the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). It is designed for students with little knowledge of Chinese language or culture. The main goal is to gain knowledge of the contemporary Chinese-speaking world through the mediation of literature. Students are also required to view filmic adaptations of literary works to examine the close connection between fiction and cinema. Students are expected to nurture a sensibility to literary and visual texts and a critical consciousness in cross-cultural context. For 519/790 students, secondary readings and additional assignments will also be required to develop a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the critical issues in contemporary Chinese literature, culture, society, and history. Critical thinking and communicational skills in an academic setting will be developed and measured through a series of class activities, writing assignments, and online quizzes.
