For Humboldt's most important writings on Latin America, data mining is now available. Fourteen volumes of Humboldt's works in English translation (Personal Narrative of Travels, seven volumes; Aspects of Nature, one volume; Researches . . . and Most Striking Scenes of the Cordilleras, two volumes; and Political Essay on the Kingdom of New Spain [Mexico], four volumes) have been scanned and digitized and allow users to search for specific words or phrases.

Scientist, cartographer, and ecological pioneer, Alexander von Humboldt set himself a vast goal: "to find out how the forces of nature interact upon one another." This program follows the first two years of Humboldt and Bonpland’s explorations as they charted rivers, gathered samples, and documented thousands of species of fauna and flora in Colombia, Cuba, and the Andes. Along with striking location footage, many of the expedition’s original maps, manuscripts, and diverse specimens are seen in Berlin’s Humboldt Museum for Natural History.

Francisco de Orellana (1511, Trujillo, Spain – November 1546, Amazon River) was a Spanish explorer and conquistador. He completed the first known navigation of the length of the Amazon River, which initially was named "Rio de Orellana." He also founded the city of Guayaquil in what is now Ecuador.

After participating with Francisco Pizarro in the conquest of Peru in 1535, Orellana moved to Guayaquil and was named governor of that area in 1538.

Charles Marie de La Condamine (1701 – 1774) was a French explorer, geographer, and mathematician. He spent ten years in present-day Ecuador measuring the length of a degree latitude at the equator and preparing the first map of the Amazon region based on astronomical observations. . His was the first scientific exploration of the Amazon.He also made some botanical studies, notably of cinchona and rubber trees. He also noted the correct use of quinine to fight malaria.

Two plant genera that were of particular interest to him during his time in South America were Hevea (the source of natural rubber) and Cinchona (the source of quinine), which he brought to the attention of Europeans (both substances were little known in Europe at that time). In addition to a scientific account of his journey, he published Journal du voyage fait par ordre du roi a l’équateur (1751; “Journal of a Voyage to the Equator Made by Order of the King”) and other works.
